Advances in tech threaten old school internet cafes

Internet cafe owner in Nasiriyah considers career shift

NASIRIYAH, November 8 — Sixteen years ago, Saad Jasim opened one of the most famous and oldest internet cafes in Nasiriyah. He persevered for years as technological advancements threatened to render his business obsolete. However, today, Jasim is seriously contemplating a career change.

Located in the Al-Habboobi district in the heart of Nasiriyah, his cafe once housed ten computers but now has only two. With the diminishing need for internet cafes, there is a growing demand for assistance in submitting government job applications, completing transaction forms, and preparing resumes. Jasim believes that adapting to these changes is essential to ensuring the longevity of any business.

Jasim shared his thoughts with 964:

“I began my business in 2007, and it experienced its ‘glory days,’ but then declined due to the home internet revolution. Many people in Nasiriyah remember the bustling years here in this cafe. With significant advancements and the reduced need for internet cafes, there are limited options for people in our profession. One option is to transform the cafes into gaming lounges, or to pivot towards providing government transaction services. I have chosen the latter path because I have gained extensive experience over the past years in writing resumes, assisting with job applications, and completing government transaction forms. I am also considering moving to a smaller place with lower expenses that suits the needs of my new career.”
