2025 Arab Cup

Iraq coach Arnold to rotate squad, focus on fitness before Algeria clash

BAGHDAD – Iraq national football team coach Graham Arnold said Monday his side will prioritize player happiness and physical readiness in Tuesday’s Arab Cup match against Algeria after already securing a place in the quarterfinals.

“The match against Algeria is a big challenge, and we need to stay focused. The most important thing is that the players are happy and physically ready,” Arnold said at a news conference.

“We aim to give as many players as possible the opportunity to play and achieve the best result,” he added.

Arnold said forward Ayman Hussein will miss Tuesday’s match due to injury but could return in time for the final if Iraq advances that far. Three players are also at risk of suspension because of yellow cards, prompting planned changes to preserve fitness and protect key members of the squad.

“I was truly impressed by what the players delivered, and I have great trust in them. After this tournament, we will have a wide pool of talented players to strengthen the squad,” Arnold said.

Iraq has already qualified for the quarterfinals after defeating Sudan 2-0 in its second group match, following a 2-1 win over Bahrain in its opener. The 2025 Arab Cup is being hosted by Qatar from Dec. 1 to 18, with 16 national teams taking part. Iraq is likely to face either Kuwait or the United Arab Emirates in the next round.
