Dana Gas denies report that Sudani ordered Khor Mor shutdown

BAGHDAD — Dana Gas on Tuesday denied an Al-Monitor report claiming Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani ordered gas production at the Khor Mor field to remain offline, saying the account was false and that the premier had instead pushed for operations to resume as quickly as possible.

In its statement, the company said, “What was mentioned in the article published on the American website Al-Monitor is completely incorrect — the Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani clearly expressed his desire to resume gas production from the Khor Mor field as soon as possible. We are grateful to him personally and to everyone in his office for their rapid response and support on security matters, and the immediate visit of senior federal officials to the Khor Mor field, and their commitment to issuing the investigation report on the attack and following up on all related matters as quickly as possible.”

Al-Monitor had reported that Sudani instructed the company to keep production offline until a ministerial committee completed its investigation into the Nov. 26 attack on the field, noting that “Sudani offered no reason.”

The outlet also quoted a senior Kurdish official saying, “We were shocked at Sudani’s audacity,” and said the Kurdistan Regional Government refused to comply, arguing that the order would leave the region without electricity.

The Khor Mor gas field in the Chamchamal district supplies much of the natural gas used to generate electricity across the Kurdistan Region. A drone strike late Wednesday hit storage facilities at the site, forcing a full shutdown that officials said removed an estimated 2,600 to 3,000 megawatts from the grid and caused widespread blackouts in Erbil, Sulaymaniyah and other areas. Regional and federal leaders, along with foreign governments and international organizations, condemned the attack and voiced support for the joint investigative committee.

KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani said on Nov. 29 that the regional government had reached an agreement with Dana Gas to restart production within hours, thanking residents for their patience during days of outages and urging Baghdad to hold those responsible accountable.

On Nov. 30, the KRG Ministry of Electricity said the 24-hour power supply had been fully restored, confirming that the national grid had returned to normal.
