Speaker Mashhadani urges swift government formation following Iraq’s elections

BAGHDAD — Speaker of the Council of Representatives Mahmoud al-Mashhadani on Thursday congratulated newly elected lawmakers and political blocs following Iraq’s parliamentary elections, calling on them to expedite government formation within constitutional timelines.

In a statement, Mashhadani wished the winners success in what he described as their “national responsibilities in service of the Iraqi people.” He urged them to “work as one team to build an effective parliament and a capable government that meets public expectations and builds Iraq’s prosperous future.”

The speaker also called for adhering to constitutional deadlines for convening parliament and forming the new government, emphasizing that swift coordination among political forces is essential to maintaining stability and public confidence.

The Independent High Electoral Commission announced preliminary results from the November 11 vote on Wednesday, confirming Prime Minister Mohammed Shiaa al-Sudani’s Reconstruction and Development Coalition as the leading bloc. Turnout reached 56.11% nationwide, with more than 12 million Iraqis casting ballots.

The Speaker of the Council of Representatives, Dr. Mahmoud al-Mashhadani, congratulated the ladies and gentlemen who won in the elections from among the members of parliament and the political blocs, wishing them success in performing their national duties in service of the Iraqi people.

His Excellency stressed the necessity of speeding up the formation of the government and holding the sessions of parliament within the constitutional time limits, and working in the spirit of one team to establish an effective parliament and a competent government capable of achieving the aspirations of citizens and building Iraq’s prosperous future.

President al-Mashhadani also extended his great thanks and high appreciation to the Independent High Electoral Commission for its great efforts in making the electoral process successful, and to the security forces in all their branches, which provided security and protection for voters and polling centers, and were truly the safety valve of the democratic process.

His Excellency called on all candidates who were not fortunate to continue serving the people of their areas and their governorates and to work in the spirit of national responsibility, confirming that competition ends with the end of the elections, and that the higher interest of the homeland and the citizen remains the greatest unifying factor for all Iraqis.
