Two killed in Basra shooting linked to drug dispute
BASRA — A dispute between suspected drug dealers in central Basra escalated into a shooting Sunday that left two people dead and two others wounded, according to local police.
Basra Police said in a statement that units quickly surrounded the scene and imposed security measures. The bodies were transferred to the forensic department, and the injured were taken to a hospital for treatment.
“The incident led to the death of two and injury of two others from drug promoters and those with criminal records after a disagreement between them developed into an exchange of fire,” police said. “Our units immediately cordoned off the area and imposed strict measures. The bodies were moved to the forensic department, and the injured were taken to the hospital for treatment. An urgent investigation has been opened to determine the circumstances and motives of the incident.”
Police later announced the arrest of one suspect involved in the shooting, which took place inside a house in the Al-Saymer area, known for drug activity. Officers seized two pistols, narcotics, drug-use tools, and mobile phones at the scene.
“The Basra Police Command managed to arrest one of the participants in the armed fight that broke out inside a house in the Al-Saymer area,” the statement said. “The armed dispute, which stemmed from a personal disagreement, resulted in the death of two people and injuries to two others. The suspect has been referred to the judiciary after the completion of legal procedures.”
Police said operations targeting drug traffickers and dealers will continue, warning that “the hand of the law will reach everyone who attempts to tamper with the security and stability of the governorate.”
Nationwide, the General Directorate of Narcotics Affairs reported seizing 250 kilograms of drugs and arresting 59 international dealers in September. In the first quarter of 2025, 3,006 people were arrested for drug-related offenses, and courts issued 973 sentences, according to an April report. Between January and August 2024, Iraqi courts handed down 140 death sentences and 500 life sentences in connection with narcotics crimes.
