Nasiriyah municipal employee sentenced to six years for bribery
NASIRIYAH — The Dhi Qar Criminal Court on Thursday sentenced an employee of the Nasiriyah Municipality Directorate to six years in prison after finding him guilty of requesting a bribe in exchange for completing property allocation paperwork, according to a statement from the judiciary’s media office.
“The Dhi Qar Criminal Court issued a six-year prison sentence against an employee of the Nasiriyah Municipality Directorate for the crime of requesting a bribe,” the statement said.
The court found that the employee had demanded money from a citizen in return for processing property allocation procedures, in violation of his official duties. The ruling was issued under Decision No. 160 of 1983, paragraph 2/1.
Under Iraq’s Penal Code No. 111 of 1969, Article 307 criminalizes bribery by public officials who request or accept money, gifts, or benefits in exchange for performing or neglecting their duties. The law carries a prison sentence of up to seven years, but under Revolutionary Command Council Resolution 160 of 1983, the punishment can extend to ten years and include a fine when the offense involves a government employee or public service provider.
