Iraq’s interior minister orders ‘severe’ legal action over police assault on Baghdad citizen
BAGHDAD — Interior Minister Abdul Amir Al-Shammari on Wednesday ordered disciplinary and legal measures against three police officers who were filmed assaulting a citizen in Baghdad while on duty.
In a statement, the Interior Ministry said Al-Shammari directed “the adoption of the most severe legal actions against three officers who assaulted and beat a citizen in the capital, exploiting their position and using an official vehicle.”
During a meeting with the victim, the minister emphasized that “human dignity is a fundamental value that must never be violated and stands above all considerations.”
He added that the ministry would not tolerate abuses of power, stating, “We will apply the necessary penalties against anyone who tries to harm or demean the dignity of an Iraqi citizen, regardless of their position.”
“The individual actions of a few do not reflect the true image of the police officers who make great efforts in this long-standing institution to serve citizens in all times and circumstances,” Al-Shammari said.
A video circulating on social media appears to show three uniformed officers forcibly dragging a young man into a vehicle while kicking and striking him. One of the officers is seen turning on and hitting the person who was filming the incident. The footage sparked widespread public outrage, prompting swift action by the ministry.
