Soran begins early winter kerosene distribution in Warte subdistrict

SORAN — The Soran Autonomous Administration in Erbil Governorate has started distributing kerosene to residents as part of its annual winter fuel program, beginning with the Warte subdistrict.

Each year, both the federal and regional governments provide subsidized kerosene to households to help families heat their homes during winter. In mountainous areas like Soran, where winters are particularly harsh, the program typically begins earlier to meet local demand. Many residents in these areas also depend on firewood from nearby forests for heating.

According to the Warte subdistrict administration, families can collect their household allocations of white oil from the local fuel station supplied by the Oil and Minerals Directorate of the Soran Administration. Each family is entitled to 200 liters at a cost of 103,500 dinars (about $73).

Distribution began Sunday and will continue until Oct. 15, 2025. The administration said residents must collect their allocations within that period, as the fuel station will not store unclaimed shares.

Authorities said the kerosene distribution is based on names registered in the national food ration system.

Iraq’s Public Distribution System, commonly known as the “ration card,” was launched in the 1990s to secure essential goods for citizens during years of conflict and sanctions. Registered households are entitled to monthly portions of staple items such as flour, rice, sugar, and cooking oil.
