Egyptian chef builds restaurant business in Balad after move to Iraq

SALAH AL-DIN— Egyptian chef Said Al-Misri, who arrived in Iraq in 2018, has established a restaurant in Balad, Salah Al-Din governorate, dedicated to bodybuilding enthusiasts, gym-goers, and others seeking fat-free meals.

His restaurant on Imam Sayyid Muhammad Street has become popular for offering affordable “diet” dishes.

Al-Misri told 964media he first entered Iraq through the Kurdistan Region before moving to Baghdad and eventually settling in Balad. “I was told the Balad city had a stable economy and security. I began in 2020 with a small food cart, and within a year I opened this restaurant,” he said.

His menu includes chicken breast, skewers, wings with rice, and family trays, with prices ranging from 2,000 to 12,000 IQD ($1.4 to $8)

Customer Aysar Ahmed said he prefers Al-Misri’s meals for their health benefits. “We usually buy diet meals because they are free of fat and recommended by doctors. The food is tasty, affordable, and healthier than other options,” he said.

Mohammed Al-Omda, another Egyptian chef working at the restaurant, said they plan to expand the menu. “We will soon add new dishes such as fish, and some Egyptian meals. Our situation here is good, and we feel Iraq is our second home,” he said.
