Ministry of Finance employee sentenced for illegal enrichment, ordered to repay nearly 1 billion dinars

BAGHDAD — Iraq’s Federal Commission of Integrity said Sunday that a Ministry of Finance employee has been sentenced to prison after being convicted of illegal enrichment totaling nearly 975 million dinars ($691,651). The court also ordered him to repay the amount, imposed a fine of equal value, and ordered the seizure of all his assets.

In a statement titled, “The Integrity Commission: imprisonment for a Ministry of Finance employee who committed the crime of illegal gain,” the commission said the verdict came from the Rusaifa Misdemeanor Court, which specializes in integrity cases.

The ruling was issued under Article 19/Third of the Integrity and Illegal Gain Law No. 30 of 2011 as amended. The court found the employee had gained 487,614,240 dinars ($345,826) through illegal means and ordered him to pay a fine of the same amount.

The verdict further stipulated that the defendant will not be released until both the fine and the illegally obtained funds are repaid. His movable and immovable assets were placed under seizure in accordance with Article 184 of Iraq’s legal procedures.

The commission said the court reached “full conviction of the defendant’s culpability” after reviewing the evidence, and that the case demonstrates ongoing efforts to enforce anti-corruption laws within state institutions.
