Greening campaign launched in Al-Qaim to enhance urban landscape

ANBAR — Crews from Al-Qaim Municipality have launched a greening campaign at the city’s entrances, planting grass and trees as part of a broader effort to improve the urban environment.

During the first stage, about 20,000 square meters of Indian grass were laid across medians and service islands, including the main entrance median. The work also included planting Albizia, Washingtonia palms, Canary palms, and Sebahbah trees, known for their dense summer growth. On the Ramadi–Baghdad road, crews planted a special turf called the “four-season mix,” made up of four types of seeds that can adapt to both summer and winter conditions, covering 3.5 kilometers across four lanes.

Khalaf Jadaan, director of Al-Qaim Municipality, told 964media: “The parks and gardens division and the environment division are working on rehabilitating the medians and the main entrance of Al-Qaim district. Indian grass has been planted in the central median, and there is a later stage for planting service medians as well. Evergreen trees have also been planted in the medians, and this campaign will give the entrance to Al-Qaim a distinctive appearance. Work is continuing to complete the second entrance west of the fountain intersection.”

He added: “The area planted with grass reached about 20,000 square meters under the direction of the governor of Anbar, with cooperation from the Ramadi and Fallujah municipal directorates, and close follow-up from the district commissioner of Al-Qaim. The aim is to plant all possible sites to beautify our city and the Karabila sub-district.”

Jadaan thanked the municipality’s teams for their work, noting the first stage was completed in three consecutive days. The second stage will extend grass planting to additional service medians.

Mohammed Abdulqader, head of the parks and gardens division in Al-Qaim Municipality, said: “We planted grass on the Ramadi–Baghdad road medians for a distance of 3.5 kilometers. The type used is the four-season mix, a blend of four seeds that can withstand both summer and winter. Planting was done at the right time with proper irrigation through tankers and watering systems to ensure the success and sustainability of the green spaces.”

He added that green spaces play a crucial role in reducing carbon dioxide levels from heavy traffic. “The campaign also included planting evergreen trees such as Albizia, Washingtonia, Canary palms, and Sebahbah, which thrive in summer and improve the environment,” he said.

“We affirm that this campaign will continue until our city appears in its best image, meeting the aspirations of citizens,” Abdulqader said. “Serving them is a responsibility we carry, and we will continue to do everything possible in this field.”
