'Experience worth having'

Najaf opens first horse-riding track, drawing young riders

NAJAF — A new horse-riding track northwest of Najaf has opened as the first facility of its kind in the governorate, quickly attracting young people and families eager to learn equestrian basics in a structured setting, according to local trainers.

The stable currently houses 12 horses. Owner Murtadha al-Fahham told 964media that daily training programs guide beginners from initial interaction with horses to full riding stages. “Our trainees have obtained certificates and excelled in some races,” he said.

The facility welcomes around nine to 10 new students each day, including young women seeking experience in the sport. “At first I felt some fear, but once I followed the trainer’s guidance I realized it was an experience worth having,” said trainee Bushra al-Sunbuli.

Local riders and stable owners said horseback riding has grown in popularity in Najaf and across Iraq, reflecting renewed interest in equestrian traditions after years of limited access.

Another trainee, Amir al-Khatib, said opportunities for equestrian training in Najaf had long been scarce but are now improving. “We now practice two or three times a week in an organized setting,” he said.
