Fire destroys 100 palm trees in Al-Huwash orchard

BASRA – A fire broke out Monday in a palm orchard in the Al-Huwash area of Al-Sadiq district, north of Basra, burning around 100 palm trees before Civil Defense teams brought the flames under control, a security source told 964media.

“Upon receiving the alert, Civil Defense teams from Al-Sadiq and Al-Qurna rushed to the scene and began firefighting operations,” the source said. “The fire had spread across large parts of the orchard, but the teams managed to contain and fully extinguish it, preventing it from reaching nearby areas.”

The cause of the fire remains unknown. Police from Al-Sadiq station have opened an investigation.

In late-August, another large fire burned 65 palm trees in an orchard in Shilha Al-Hajjaj area in Al-Izaddin Salim district, north of Basra.

Basra’s Directorate of Agriculture reported in December 2024 that the governorate has more than 2.63 million palm trees, citing government support for expanding cultivation. Prominent varieties include Barhi, Sayer, Bream, and Khadrawi.
