Doctors remove 26 sharp objects from man’s stomach in Sulaymaniyah
SULAYMANIYAH — A medical team in Sulaymaniyah successfully removed 26 sharp and metallic objects from the stomach and intestines of a 29-year-old man during a complex surgical procedure, health officials said Tuesday evening.
The operation, conducted under the supervision of specialists in gastrointestinal and liver surgery, involved the extraction of 16 tweezers, eight stainless steel needles, and two bags used to store tweezers.
Saman Latif, spokesperson for the Sulaymaniyah Health Directorate, told 964media, “We performed a complex surgery by a specialized medical team on a 29-year-old man. Sixteen tweezers, eight stainless needles, and two tweezers’ bags were extracted from his intestines. The patient is currently undergoing treatment and monitoring.”
Dr. Hiwa O. Bakr Hussein, the lead surgeon, described the case as one of the rarest he had encountered in the field. “This is one of the rare cases we’ve encountered in this specialty, because of the number of sharp foreign objects the patient had ingested,” he said.
“The patient suffers from psychological disorders, which led him to swallow all these needles and tweezers. He had been experiencing severe pain when he arrived at the hospital,” Hussein added.
He said the operation was successful and urged strong family support and medical monitoring moving forward to prevent the behavior from recurring.
