Iraq launches riverboat safety inspections following Kut fire

BAGHDAD — Iraq’s Ministry of Transport has launched a nationwide inspection campaign targeting private riverboats to ensure compliance with safety regulations, a senior official said, days after a deadly fire at a commercial complex in Kut killed more than 60 people.

Maytham Al-Safi, the ministry’s media director, told Al-Sabah newspaper the campaign is designed “to ensure the availability of safety equipment” on board and verify that boat operators hold valid licenses. “The goal is to protect passengers during river trips,” he said.

Field committees will conduct inspections across Baghdad and other governorates, with legal measures to follow any violations uncovered during the checks, Al-Safi added.

He noted that vessels operated under the state-run General Company for Maritime Transport—including those affiliated with the river taxi project—already meet safety standards, are staffed by trained personnel, and receive regular maintenance.

The campaign comes amid heightened concern over public safety following the July 17 fire at the Corniche Hypermarket in Wasit governorate, where most victims died from smoke inhalation. The Interior Ministry said 610 commercial and industrial facilities across Iraq were shut down on July 18 for violating civil defense regulations.
