Sumer University makes significant progress on first University City in Dhi Qar

NASIRIYAH, October 24 — Sumer University has announced significant progress in the first University City project in Dhi Qar, where work began earlier this year on a 400-acre site.

The University City project features 20 buildings including colleges, research centers, scientific laboratories, and internal departments, and is being executed in two phases.

Sumer University offers various disciplines, including medicine, engineering, basic education, sciences, agriculture, law, and economics. It was established in 2011.

There are three universities in the governorate: Dhi Qar University in Nasiriyah, Shatrah University in Shatrah district, and Sumer University in Al-Rifai district. The latter will become a comprehensive university city upon completion of the current project.

Dr. Adel Radi, President of Sumer University, stated, “The project was launched earlier this year, and among the 20 buildings, five will be allocated for research centers. The project spans 400 acres east of Sumer district, behind the highway connecting to the northern cities.”

Mohammed Mohsen, Head of the Reconstruction and Projects Department at Sumer University, added, “The first phase included the construction of the exterior fence, with a completion rate of 30 percent, at a cost of 2.5 billion Iraqi dinars. It also includes the construction of the College of Sciences, with a completion rate of 40 percent, costing 3.5 billion Iraqi dinars. The project’s designs cost 700 million Iraqi dinars, and its completion rate is 100 percent.”

The remaining buildings will be constructed during the second phase, funded by the Dhi Qar Reconstruction Fund for 2021.
