Al-Sudani voices Iraq’s ‘full solidarity’ with Iran, warns of ‘dangerous consequences’

BAGHDAD — Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani voiced “Iraq’s full solidarity” with Iran during a meeting Monday with a number of ambassadors and heads of diplomatic missions operating in Iraq as Israel and Iran continue to trade strikes for the fourth day running.

“The Zionist occupation government does not recognize international and humanitarian laws and continues to commit crimes and massacres since the events of October 7,” Al-Sudani said, criticizing what he described as the international community’s failure to preserve peace and security.

Iraq’s Foreign Ministry announced Friday that it had submitted a formal complaint to the United Nations Security Council, condemning what it described as Israeli violations of Iraqi airspace and calling on the Council “to take legal and moral action” to prevent further incidents. “These practices represent a flagrant violation of Iraq’s sovereignty,” the ministry said in a statement.

He warned of “dangerous consequences” if such violations continue. Reiterating Iraq’s stance, he added, “We reject any breach of our sovereignty,” noting that Iraq has lodged an official complaint with international and United Nations bodies due to the use of its airspace by Israel.

During a phone call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Sunday, Al-Sudani said Iraq views Iran’s security and stability as “integral to the security and stability of the entire region.” He affirmed Iraq’s readiness to provide “all necessary forms of assistance,” describing it as part of the principles of solidarity that “unite Islamic nations.”

Statement from Al-Sudani’s media office:

Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani met today, Monday, a number of heads of diplomatic missions from Asian and American countries operating in Iraq, as well as the Ambassadors of Australia and Türkiye.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister affirmed that the Zionist occupation government does not recognize international and humanitarian laws and continues to commit crimes and massacres since the events of October 7. He pointed to the failure of the international community, which bears the responsibility of preserving peace and security.

The Prime Minister emphasized that Iraq urges the international community, and particularly the United States, to fulfill its role in halting this aggression and to pursue a peaceful solution through the resumption of negotiations. He affirmed that Iraq has exerted considerable efforts to stop the aggression by engaging in extensive communications with world leaders and foreign ministers.

Prime Minister Al-Sudani expressed Iraq’s full solidarity with the Islamic Republic of Iran, describing it as a sovereign and important regional state, and a member of the international community. He condemned the Zionist aggression against Iran, considering it a threat to global peace and security, as well as to Iraq’s stability and security. He highlighted that such violations of international law by the occupying entity will have dangerous consequences, emphasizing Iraq’s rejection of any breach of its sovereignty, noting that Iraq has submitted an official complaint to international and United Nations bodies.

Prime Minister Al-Sudani also noted that the Zionist entity is seeking to expand the scope of war in the region in an attempt to redraw the map of the Middle East. He affirmed Iran’s legitimate right to self-defense in accordance with United Nations laws.
