'Malicious rumors'

Iyad Allawi’s office denies death rumors, says former PM in good health

BAGHDAD — The media office of former Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi on Thursday dismissed rumors of his death, confirming that he is in good health and currently undergoing routine medical procedures in Jordan.

“Dr. Iyad Allawi is well and enjoying good health, thanks to God,” the office said in a statement. “He is currently in the Jordanian capital, Amman, for a minor medical procedure and routine check-ups, and will return to Iraq soon.”

The statement described the reports as “malicious rumors” and “baseless lies,” condemning their circulation on social media and calling on media outlets to verify information before publishing.

“We strongly condemn the promotion of such rumors, which aim to spread anxiety and confuse public opinion,” the statement said. It urged people to “act responsibly and avoid sharing false news that lacks credibility and professionalism.”

Allawi, 80, was born in Baghdad in 1944. He served as Iraq’s interim prime minister from 2004 to 2005 following the U.S.-led invasion, and later as vice president from 2014 to 2015 and again from 2016 to 2018. He has remained an influential figure in Iraqi politics.
