New park in Safwan draws large crowds during Eid holiday

BASRA — A newly opened park in Safwan, a southern border town in Basra governorate, has attracted large crowds since its inauguration on the first day of Eid al-Adha, according to municipal officials and residents.

Located near the Kuwaiti border crossing, the eight-dunum park features a range of attractions, including a dancing fountain with modern lighting, a man-made waterfall, a running water canal, and a collection of children’s rides not previously available in the governorate.

Abdelmohsen Abdul Ali, public relations officer at the Safwan Municipality, said the project represents a new model for local public spaces. “The Safwan Municipal Directorate inaugurated a modern and model amusement park, which includes a set of children’s rides being used for the first time in Basra governorate,” he told 964media.

He said the site also includes seating areas, a dedicated parking lot, and a modern-style fountain. “We call on young people to give space to families to enjoy the park and take advantage of its facilities. It is intended for families, and its operation was coordinated with the security services, whom we thank for their support and presence,” he said.

The park is part of a series of new public spaces launched to improve recreational opportunities for local residents.

Visitors praised the initiative. “We thank Safwan Municipality and its staff for their excellent work and the services they offer to the children of Safwan,” said Hussein Sukkar, a local resident. “We noticed new features today. We’re used to Safwan Municipality introducing new things during holidays.”

“We visited the new park near the crossing and brought our children. Time passed quickly thanks to the variety of games and services for children and families,” he added. “Honestly, without exaggeration, we’re seeing outstanding performance from the municipality in terms of cleanliness and service quality. We’re enjoying an atmosphere we used to miss.”

Another visitor, Hawraa Mohammed, said, “Eid Mubarak. Thank you to Safwan Municipality for opening this beautiful park. We enjoyed it very much, and the rides were wonderful.”
