Iraq signs telecom transit agreement aiming to route international data through national network

BAGHDAD — Iraq on Thursday signed a telecommunications transit agreement with DIL Technology, a company licensed in the Kurdistan Region, as part of ongoing efforts to establish the country as a corridor for international data traffic.

The deal was finalized under the supervision of Minister of Communications Hayam Al-Yasiri and signed by the state-run General Company for Communications and Informatics. It allows data to be routed across Iraqi territory, from the southern port of Al-Faw to the northern Ibrahim Al-Khalil border crossing, through what is known as “temporary transit” or transit routing.

“This contract is an important step toward activating the Iraqi corridor and turning it into a global hub,” Al-Yasiri said at the signing ceremony. She described the project as part of a broader strategy to increase non-oil revenues by leveraging Iraq’s geographic position.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Communications, the agreement is expected to unify Iraq’s telecommunications infrastructure for the first time, connecting the country’s north and south in a single system. It also brings companies licensed in the Kurdistan Region under the administrative umbrella of the federal ministry for this project.

Officials said the ministry has adopted flexible pricing policies aimed at attracting international carriers and offering an alternative to maritime routes such as the Suez Canal.
