Woman in critical condition after receiving wrong blood type during childbirth
ZAKHO — A woman is in critical condition and under intensive medical care after receiving the wrong blood type during a childbirth procedure at Zakho’s Maternity and Pediatric Hospital, prompting an official investigation by health authorities.
The incident occurred on May 1 around 9 p.m., when the 38-year-old patient, whose blood type is B+, required two units of blood during labor. One unit of B+ blood was correctly administered, but the other was mistakenly A+, according to the Zakho Health Directorate.
“We reject all reports suggesting the woman received 150 units of blood,” said Amir Ali, spokesperson for the directorate. “The fact is only one incorrect unit was transfused.”
He confirmed the transfusion error and said the mismatch triggered a sharp deterioration in the patient’s condition. She remains under close medical supervision in critical condition.
Family members of the patient dispute the official version, telling 964media they believe more than one mismatched unit was administered. “A large amount of mismatched blood was given to her, not just one unit,” a relative said.
In response to the incident, health officials formed a five-member committee comprising specialists from the maternity, anesthesia, laboratory, intensive care, and hospital administration departments to investigate the error and determine responsibility.
“The results will be announced tomorrow, and the necessary measures will be taken,” Ali said.
