The newly added areas include Tayrawa, Mustawfi, Kurani Ankawa, Ankawa, Salahaddin and Minara.
The ministry said the project now serves 26 neighborhoods in Erbil, benefiting approximately 346,000 residents. Previously included areas under the program include Shadi, Bahari Nwe, Naznaz, Bakhtiari, Sarbasti, Kuran, Kurdistan, Majidawa, Rizgari, Bahar, Krekaren, Azadi, Rasti, Nishtiman, Raparin, Newroz, Mardin, Zanyari, Ta’jil and Araban.
“The Runaki project is ongoing and expanding. So far, across the Kurdistan Region, 415,000 residents have received 24-hour electricity and approximately 600 private generators have been shut down in 35 different neighborhoods,” the ministry said in a statement.
Launched on Oct. 17, 2023, by Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, the Runaki project began in the Shadi and Naznaz neighborhoods. It aims to provide uninterrupted power to the entire Kurdistan Region by the end of 2026.
The project utilizes existing energy resources, including natural gas from the Khor Mor field and hydroelectric power from dams such as Dukan and Darbandikhan.
