Iraq resumes visa processing for Syrians with Iraqi family ties
NEWSROOM — Iraq has resumed issuing entry visas for Syrians with family ties to Iraqi citizens, the country’s embassy in Damascus announced, marking a return for a consular activity halted following the ouster of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad late last year.
In a statement, the embassy said Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani approved the move, allowing certain categories of Syrians to enter Iraq after receiving clearance from the Security Audit Office. The embassy will coordinate directly with the audit office on behalf of eligible applicants.
According to the announcement, visas will be granted to Syrians married to Iraqi citizens, including cases involving minor children from previous marriages, as well as Iraqi citizens wishing to bring a Syrian parent into the country.
The embassy urged those eligible to visit the consular section in Damascus with a certified marriage contract and other supporting documents.
Iraq temporarily closed its embassy in Damascus in December 2024, citing security concerns following Assad’s removal. Officials described the closure as a precautionary measure.
