Duhok to activate controversial point-to-point speed cameras on Zakho road

DUHOK — The Duhok Traffic Directorate announced Tuesday that point-to-point speed surveillance cameras will be activated on the road between Duhok and the Zakho Autonomous Administration starting April 15.

Authorities said the speed limit on the road is 100 kilometers per hour for small vehicles and 80 kilometers per hour for trucks.

Point-to-point–or average–speed cameras track the time it takes for a vehicle to travel between two fixed locations, typically spaced three to four kilometers apart. If a vehicle reaches the second point faster than allowed by the speed limit, a fine is automatically issued.

The system is designed to prevent drivers from speeding between traditional fixed cameras and slowing down only as they approach them.

They have proven controversial among the Kurdistan Region public since first being introduced.

The technology was first introduced in the Kurdistan Region on May 29, 2023, along the Sulaymaniyah–Dukan road.
