Ongoing road safety concerns

One killed in traffic accident on Kirkuk-Taza road

KIRKUK — One person was killed Tuesday in a traffic accident involving a BMW and a Kia on the road connecting Kirkuk to the Taza subdistrict, according to local sources.

Ahmed Naji, a staff member at Taza Hospital, told 964media that the body of an elderly civilian was brought to the hospital shortly after the incident. “Shortly before, the body of an elderly civilian who died in a traffic accident on the Taza-Kirkuk Road arrived at our hospital,” he said.

The victim’s body was later transferred to the forensic medicine department in Kirkuk.

A source from the Taza traffic police said the road where the accident occurred is heavily used and connects Kirkuk to several other provinces and districts, making it prone to accidents.

Traffic fatalities remain a serious concern across Iraq. On Monday night, a high-speed crash near the Pirmam tunnel in Erbil killed one man and injured two others, according to hospital officials and eyewitnesses.
