Tribal clash leaves three dead, four injured

KIRKUK — A violent clash between two tribal groups in the Qaratepa village of western Kirkuk left three people dead and four injured, according to local police.

The dispute, reportedly rooted in a longstanding social issue, erupted during a football match involving young members of the Bayat and Albura tribes.

“A few days ago, a fight broke out among several young men from both tribes. Today, during a soccer game, the conflict flared up again into a full-blown clash,” a police source told 964media.

Initially, two people were reported dead and three injured — one critically. Later, a medical source told 964media the toll rose to three dead and four injured after the victims were taken to Azadi Teaching Hospital in Kirkuk. “Different types of weapons were used during the clash,” the source said.

Police arrested about 18 individuals in connection with the incident. A statement provided to 964media read, “Following the fight and gunfire in Qaratepa village, Kirkuk Police Command, accompanied by a tactical unit and SWAT team, responded to the scene.”

Weapons used in the confrontation were seized, and the suspects were transferred for investigation under Article 406 of the penal code, which pertains to murder.

Police and rescue teams were also dispatched to the hospital to confirm the casualties. The police statement emphasized that those detained will face prosecution.
