Crash kills one, injures another in Sulaymaniyah

SULAYMANIYAH—A person was killed and another injured in a collision involving two trucks near the town of Gopala in Bazian district, local authorities said Thursday.

Eyewitness Twana Shwan told 964media that a fuel tanker traveling toward the main Kirkuk-Sulaymaniyah Road collided with another truck, killing one driver at the scene.

Ismail Amin, director of Bazian Health Center, said a 29-year-old injured in the crash was taken to the center. The man is in stable condition but requires transfer to a hospital in Sulaymaniyah for further treatment.

Traffic fatalities remain a major concern. For the first six months of 2024, officials recorded 111 traffic-related deaths, while in 2023 the Sulaymaniyah Traffic Directorate reported 1,047 incidents that resulted in 153 deaths and 1,887 injuries.
