Al-Sudani, France’s Macron discuss regional stability, counterterrorism in phone call

BAGHDAD — Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani and French President Emmanuel Macron discussed regional stability, counterterrorism, and economic cooperation in a phone call on Saturday, according to a readout from the Prime Minister’s Office.

The two leaders shared views on Syria’s political future, stressing the need for an inclusive process that represents the country’s social diversity. They also emphasized efforts to combat terrorism and extremism, ensure stability in Lebanon, and push for Gaza’s reconstruction while maintaining the ceasefire.

They “agreed to form a joint team” to organize a trip to Baghdad for Macron.

Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani received a phone call today, Saturday, from French President Emmanuel Macron, during which they discussed various issues of mutual interest.

During the call, both leaders agreed to form a joint team to schedule President Macron’s visit to Baghdad and explore the possibility of holding the third edition of the Baghdad Conference for Cooperation and Partnership.

The conversation reflected converging views between Iraq and France regarding the new political process in Syria, emphasizing that it must represent the country’s social diversity. Both sides stressed the importance of combating terrorism and extremism and advancing a pluralistic and inclusive political process. They also underscored the need to ensure stability in Lebanon, intensify efforts for Gaza’s reconstruction, maintain the ceasefire, and prevent any escalation due to non-compliance.

Regarding regional developments, both leaders agreed on joint coordination to enhance stability and prevent further escalation. They emphasized the need for a peaceful resolution to the Iranian file, cautioning against escalatory actions, and highlighted the importance of resolving disputes through dialogue.

Prime Minister Al-Sudani reaffirmed Iraq’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation at various levels, particularly in the economic and cultural sectors. He highlighted key projects undertaken by French companies in Iraq and the potential for expanding their presence, especially in light of President Macron’s upcoming visit.

For his part, President Macron expressed France’s eagerness to continue cooperation with Iraq across different fields. He reiterated France’s readiness to coordinate with Iraq in counterterrorism efforts, recognizing terrorism as a global challenge and a regional security threat. He also commended Iraq’s role and efforts in combating terrorism.
