Three arrested for alleged ties to cult group linked to ritual suicides

DHI QAR – Iraq’s National Security Service arrested three men in their twenties on Thursday in Souq Al-Shiyoukh, Dhi Qar, on charges of belonging to the extremist group “Al-Alaahiyah,” also known as Qurban, a security source told 964media.

Authorities accuse the group of recruiting young people into radical movements and contributing to multiple suicide cases, the source said.

“The National Security Service in Souq Al-Shiyoukh arrested three individuals in their twenties who were involved with the Al-Alaahiyah group, which is known for luring young people into deviant ideologies,” the source said.

Security forces have launched further operations to track down additional individuals connected to the network.

Al-Alaahiyah, an extremist Shia faction, promotes radical practices, including encouraging suicide during religious rituals and elevating Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib to a divine status—beliefs that deviate from mainstream Shia teachings. Authorities say these doctrines have contributed to multiple suicides in Iraq’s southern governorates, prompting law enforcement to take action against the group.
