'Entirely untrue'

Najaf police dismiss social media claims of delivery driver being set on fire

NAJAF — Najaf governorate police have dismissed social media reports alleging that a delivery driver was set on fire in the city, calling the claims “entirely untrue.”

In a Tuesday statement, the police said, “The Najaf Police Command denies the accuracy of what has been circulated on social media regarding the ‘burning of a delivery driver’ in the governorate.” The statement emphasized that “this news is entirely untrue, and there are no official reports or complaints confirming such an incident.”

The police urged the public to “avoid spreading false news, verify information from official sources, and refrain from sharing or circulating rumors intended to cause confusion.”

The denial follows a video that circulated online late last night showing individuals attempting to extinguish a burning object. In the footage, voices in the background ask if anyone recognizes the item, and one person claims he is a delivery driver. Some users speculated that the video depicts a delivery driver who was set on fire and robbed of his motorcycle. However, it remains unclear what exactly is burning in the video or where the incident took place. The individuals in the footage speak in the Iraqi Arabic dialect.
