PM Al-Sudani reviews summer electricity plan, orders extra fuel for generators during Ramadan
BAGHDAD – Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani chaired a meeting Sunday to review Iraq’s electricity supply plans for the upcoming summer, focusing on production, distribution, billing procedures, and digital transformation, according to his media office.
Al-Sudani directed the Ministry of Electricity to take technical steps to improve power supply during Ramadan and instructed additional fuel provisions for private generators to extend electricity hours.
Iraq continues to face electricity shortages, particularly in the summer when temperatures often exceed 122 degrees Fahrenheit (50 degrees celsius). While the government has repeatedly promised to resolve the power crisis, demand consistently outpaces supply.
Statement from Al-Sudani’s media office:
Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani chaired a meeting today, Sunday, of the Electricity Sector Team, dedicated to following up on measures for the implementation of the Summer 2025 Plan, billing procedures, and the digital transformation across all sector branches.
The meeting included a review of the emergency plan prepared for the upcoming summer, assessing the needs of production and distribution sectors, and discussing electricity projects expected to be completed and operational soon. Additionally, the meeting covered the billing process, examining it from both technical and field perspectives.
The Prime Minister directed the Ministry of Electricity to take technical measures to improve the power supply during the holy month of Ramadan. He also instructed an additional fuel supply for private generators to extend power supply hours, ensuring citizens’ needs are met during iftar and suhoor times.
His Excellency emphasized the importance of billing as a critical mechanism for sustaining the state’s ability to maintain energy production. He stressed the need to eliminate negative practices in meter installation and instructed authorities to investigate corruption allegations related to this process in some areas, as well as unauthorized exemptions granted to certain commercial and industrial centers.
The meeting also covered the maintenance plan and the Ministry of Electricity’s efforts to carry out maintenance work on power stations, generation units, and transmission lines across Iraq. Discussions focused on the financial allocations for these activities and the necessity of completing maintenance before peak demand season.
Additionally, the meeting addressed the supply of gas oil for power plants, the required quantities, and transmission mechanisms to ensure stable electricity supply. Technical discussions also included floating platforms, implementation mechanisms, available capacities, and the expected amount of electricity they will contribute to the grid.
