Two suffer from smoke inhalation in blaze blamed on children playing with fire

DIANA — A house in the Kani neighborhood of Soran’s Diana subdistrict caught fire Friday after children were playing with fire, the Soran Civil Defense Directorate said.

Firefighters from the Diana and Soran stations responded to extinguish the blaze. The statement confirmed that the fire was caused by children playing with fire inside the house.

Two women suffered breathing difficulties from smoke inhalation and were taken to a Soran hospital for treatment. Officials emphasized that, aside from material damage, no fatalities or serious injuries were reported.

Fires remain a frequent occurrence across the region. From January to October 2024, the Erbil Civil Defense recorded 2,057 fire incidents. Dried grass and shrubs were the leading cause, accounting for 842 cases. Those fires resulted in 46 fatalities — 22 from burns and 24 from suffocation — while 89 people sustained injuries. Civil Defense teams managed to rescue 56 individuals and recover 11 vehicles during these emergencies.
