Riyadh Zaji
Iraqi candy vendor’s journey inspires local youth
MAYSAN — Since 2014, Riyadh Zaji, a cotton candy vendor from Nasiriyah, has crisscrossed Iraq in pursuit of a livelihood, hauling his candy-making machine from Baghdad to Basra, Amarah and ultimately to Maysan’s Al-Qala’a Al-Salih district.
Zaji launched his mobile business using a small motorized cart known locally as a “satuta.” Over time, he upgraded to a vehicle that streamlined his operations, allowing him to serve more customers and cover greater distances.
“Work is available for those who seek it,” Zaji told 964media, urging unemployed youth to take initiative rather than wait passively for opportunities.
Zaji’s colorful cotton candy—crafted from sugar and food coloring—has become a well-known treat wherever he goes. His determination and entrepreneurial spirit have struck a chord with locals. Haidar Wahi of Al-Qala’a Al-Salih praised the vendor’s persistence, saying, “This is a wonderful and old idea. Many young people claim there’s no work, but in reality, there are opportunities. We see young men coming from distant places like Nasiriyah, working hard to earn an honest living, and they are always welcome here.”
