Motorcycle owners in Tuz Khurmatu face 90-day registration deadline
TUZ KHURMATU – Motorcycle owners in Tuz Khurmatu, Salah Al-Din, have 90 days to register their vehicles or face confiscation, officials said. The move, part of a nationwide directive issued by Iraq’s Council of Ministers, takes effect March 1, 2025, and will last three months.
Muayad Abbas, director of Tuz Khurmatu’s traffic department, told 964media that unlicensed motorcycles will begin being registered at the start of March. Owners who have not yet registered or obtained permits must comply within the deadline.
“The requirement for registration is that applicants must be at least 16 years old,” Abbas said.
After the grace period, authorities plan an “intensive crackdown” targeting motorcycles without proper documentation. Abbas added that owners of previously confiscated motorcycles can visit the traffic department to reclaim their vehicles and complete the registration process.
Recent data from the Tuz Khurmatu traffic directorate shows that more than 300 unregistered motorcycles were seized in the past three months. The district also experienced a sharp rise in traffic incidents in 2024, with over 40 fatalities and more than 100 injuries reported—a 40% increase from 2023—which included motorcyclists among the victims.
