Officials call for regular cleanups

Volunteers, environmental groups, students launch cleanup campaign at Duhok dam

DUHOK — Volunteers and environmental organizations carried out a cleanup campaign at Duhok Dam on Tuesday, removing waste from the surrounding area and parts of the reservoir, officials said.

The initiative was organized by Kurdistan Foundation, Climate.krd, Volunteer.krd, and a number of university students, with supervision from the dam administration.

Duhok Dam Director Farhad Mohammed Tahir told 964media that the cleanup was necessary due to the accumulation of waste following heavy rainfall. “After every rainfall, large amounts of trash and debris enter the dam, making cleanup essential,” Tahir said.

Last year, a similar campaign collected 10 tons of waste from the dam. Tahir emphasized the need for multiple annual cleanups to prevent excessive waste buildup.

The Duhok Dam, located on the northern tip of Duhok city, holds about 28 million cubic meters of water and is indispensable for the region’s agriculture. Since starting operations in 1988, the dam has been a pivotal water resource.
