Halabja authorities seize expired food, fine businesses in market inspections

HALABJA — Health inspectors in Halabja conducted market sweeps Wednesday, seizing expired food products and fining four businesses, the Halabja Health Protection Directorate announced.

The inspections targeted various markets, restaurants, and public establishments, where officials discovered expired spices, canned goods, and other consumables.

“All expired products have been seized, and four businesses were fined as a result,” the directorate said in a statement.

Photos released by the directorate showed numerous expired food items removed from store shelves.

Located near the Iranian border and approximately 83 kilometers southeast of Sulaymaniyah, Halabja has been officially recognized as a governorate by the Kurdistan Regional Government.

In addition to market inspections, authorities continued monitoring border crossings. In recent days, nearly 24 tons of spoiled goods were confiscated and returned to Iran through the Shushme border crossing, which connects Halabja Governorate with Kermanshah Province in Iran.

In 2024, a total of 89,192 tons of agricultural and commercial goods entered the Kurdistan Region via the Shushme border crossing. Of these imports, approximately 196,630 kilograms were deemed unfit for use and were seized before being sent back to Iran.
