Nearly 24 tons of spoiled goods seized at Shushme Border Crossing
HALABJA — Nearly 24 tons of spoiled goods have been confiscated and returned to Iran this year through the Shushme border crossing, officials announced Wednesday.
“From the beginning of this year to date, 23 tons and 795 kilograms of spoiled goods, including dates, peppers, onions, and grapes, were confiscated at the Shushme border crossing,” said Star Mahmoud, head of agriculture in Halabja, speaking to 964media. Mahmoud confirmed that all confiscated items were returned to Iranian authorities in the western Kurdistan region.
On January 20, 2025, the General Directorate of Agriculture in Halabja reported that more than 14 tons of onions deemed unfit for consumption were sent back to Iran.
The Shushme border crossing connects Halabja Governorate in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region with Kermanshah Province in Iran. The last urban center on the Kurdistan side is the town of Tawela, located approximately 22 kilometers from central Halabja.
In 2024, the Shushme border crossing facilitated the import of 89,192 tons of agricultural and commercial goods into the Kurdistan Region. Of these imports, nearly 196,630 kilograms were found unfit for use and were confiscated before being returned to Iran.
