Annual lettuce harvest in Erbil’s Segrdan tops 10,000 tons

ERBIL — Farmers in Segrdkan sub-district, part of Koya District in Erbil governorate, have started their annual lettuce harvest, with production reaching nearly 10,000 tons per year.

While precise agricultural statistics for the area remain unavailable, Segrdkan is recognized as one of the largest lettuce-producing regions in the Kurdistan Region.

Bakr Faisal, the Director of Segrdkan Sub-district, told 964media that the area’s high production output not only meets local demand but also supplies markets in Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, and Kirkuk.

“In addition to lettuce, farmers here grow a variety of crops, including cauliflower, broccoli, and cabbage. The production surplus is exported to other cities after meeting local needs,” Faisal explained.

Sabah Haji Othman, director of agriculture in Taqtaq District, emphasized the significance of Segrdkan’s agricultural contributions, describing it as one of the most important lettuce-producing regions in Kurdistan.

“Lettuce is cultivated not only in the central areas but also in most of the surrounding villages, particularly in Sekani village, which plays a major role in annual production,” Othman added.

Segrdkan is located approximately 75 kilometers southeast of Erbil and 60 kilometers southwest of Koya. The sub-district benefits from the Little Zab River, which nourishes its fertile lands and supports its agricultural activities.
