KRG announces New Year holidays starting Dec. 25

KURDISTAN REGION — The Kurdistan Regional Government has announced official public holidays for the New Year, beginning Dec. 25.

According to a statement from the KRG Media and Information Department, “From Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2024, to Thursday, Jan. 2, 2025, all public institutions across the Kurdistan Region will observe an official holiday.”

The statement also noted that regular working hours in all public institutions will resume on Sunday, Jan. 5, 2025. Fridays and Saturdays are regular weekends in various KRG institutions.

The Kurdistan Regional Government’s official holiday calendar for 2024, granted citizens a total of 24 days off. April stood out with the highest concentration of holidays, including a week-long break.

Key dates in the calendar include New Year’s Day on Jan. 1, followed by significant commemorations in March: the start of the Kurdistan Uprising on the 5th, the March 11 Agreement of 1970, Mustafa Barzani’s birthday on the 14th, and the Newroz celebrations on the 21st, 22nd, and 23rd. April features seven holidays: Assyrian New Year on the 1st, the fall of the Ba’athist regime on the 9th, Ramadan Feast from the 10th to the 12th, and Yazidi New Year on the 24th.
