Iraqi childcare center offers free workshops with focus on holistic child development
NAJAF — In a country where childcare centers are still relatively uncommon, the “Aura Center for Child Development” in Najaf is setting a new standard by prioritizing children’s health and mental well-being. Led by Director Maryam Khalil, the center focuses on everything from dental care and nutrition to addressing hyperactivity disorders.
In addition to its daily activities, the center hosts free Saturday workshops open to all children, focusing on a different topic each week. Last Saturday, the workshop emphasized dental care, where pediatric dentist Dr. Dania Al-Mousawi delivered practical guidance to parents and children alike.
“Today, we explained the main causes of tooth decay, which can stem from genetic factors or negligence by parents,” Dr. Al-Mousawi said during her workshop session. “Children often consume carbohydrate-rich foods and sugary drinks like soda without brushing or rinsing their teeth afterward.”
Dr. Al-Mousawi emphasized that preventing tooth decay involves proper tooth brushing techniques, changing toothbrushes every two months, and visiting dental clinics every six months at a minimum.
According to Maryam Khalil, Director of the Aura Center, the facility provides a dedicated space for children’s growth and learning.
“Aura has a special section for children, and every Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., we offer free workshops accessible to all segments of society,” Khalil said. “Today’s workshop was about how to care for and protect our children’s teeth from cavities.”
She added that these workshops cover various topics, including hyperactivity in children, proper nutrition, and other health-related themes, with the goal of offering families practical tools to support their children’s growth and development.
