'Spreading hazardous emissions'
Soran authorities shut down asphalt factory over environmental violations
SORAN — Authorities in Soran Administration, Erbil, have shut down an asphalt production factory on Sunday due to its significant environmental damage, according to the Soran Environment Directorate.
The factory had long been a source of public complaints, with residents attributing severe environmental pollution in Soran to its operations.
Following inspections by committees from the district administration and the Environment Directorate, authorities decided to close the factory until it fully complies with environmental standards.
Hazhar Mahir, head of the Soran Environment Directorate, told 964media, “The lack of air filtration systems, the factory’s proximity to residential areas, and the absence of essential environmental, health, and urban safety standards were the main reasons behind its closure.”
He added that the factory must fully adhere to environmental guidelines in the coming months before any potential reopening.
Mahir emphasized, “The factory was spreading hazardous emissions across the city. Its closure aligns with the Prime Minister’s directive to shut down illegal and non-compliant industrial facilities and refineries.”
The directorate also announced plans to inspect four additional factories in the area. Mahir stated that any factory failing to meet environmental standards or causing harm to the environment will face immediate closure.
