Abu Nawas street hosts Baghdad school marathon in collaboration with French embassy

BAGHDAD – The General Directorate of Physical Education and School Activities, in cooperation with the French Embassy, organized the Baghdad School Sports Marathon on Abu Nawas Street on Thursday. The event was attended by the French Ambassador to Iraq, Patrick Durrell, and representatives from the six education directorates of Baghdad.

Mohammed Ibrahim Aboudi, Director General of Physical Education and School Activities at the Ministry of Education, highlighted the ministry’s commitment to promoting school sports. “Under the patronage of Minister of Education Ibrahim Namis Al-Jubouri, the Baghdad School Marathon commenced with participation from high school school students,” Aboudi told 964media.

He announced upcoming events, including a national handball championship for high school students next month. The tournament will involve 20 general directorates across the country, with the ministry covering accommodations, meals, and transportation. Additionally, a women’s sports tournament is scheduled for February following mid-year exams.

“We are emphasizing the revival of physical education and school tournaments across districts and provinces,” Aboudi said. He also revealed plans for an initiative targeting elementary school students of both genders, set to launch in February.

“The Iraqi school sports system is the cornerstone for advancing the country’s athletic development,” he added.
