Neglected Hamoon Park in Koya awaits restoration budget

KOYA — Hamoon Park in Koya, Erbil, remains abandoned and neglected, with no visitors, according to local officials. The Koya Municipality stated that restoration is possible if a budget is allocated for the park, just 16 years after it was opened.

The park, built by Koya Municipality, was later handed over to a private company for the establishment of recreational facilities and management. However, the company left the project incomplete.

Koya Mayor Mohammed Mirhaj told 964media that the municipality has now taken over the management of the park but lacks a specific budget for its restoration. “Like other parks, no dedicated funds are allocated for Hamoon Park. However, if a budget is made available, we will restore it,” Mirhaj said.

He added, “Once the park is restored, we plan to allocate sections for setting up cabins to be rented out annually at symbolic rates, allowing Koya residents to benefit from the space and bring more life to the park.”

The park spans approximately one acre of land and is located in Hamoon neighborhood in Koya.
