Mosul municipality orders eviction of 320 families from Bab Sinjar Housing Complex

NINEVEH — The Mosul Municipality has ordered the evacuation of 320 apartments in the Bab Sinjar Housing Complex, located on the city’s west, within one week. The decision comes after the expiration of two-year housing contracts, with plans to repurpose the units for new projects. However, residents, many of whom are displaced persons and individuals with special needs, say they have no alternative housing options.

Speaking to 964media, Ghazwan Ali from the Mosul Municipality stated, “The municipal teams have informed residents of Bab Sinjar apartments to vacate within seven days due to the end of their contracts. Legal measures will be taken to reallocate or lease the apartments anew. Residents may reapply to rent the units but must comply with the evacuation first.”

The housing units were initially provided under a directive from the former governor and the Directorate of Migration and Displacement two years ago.

Residents have raised alarm about the abrupt decision, highlighting their inability to secure alternative accommodation. “I am disabled and care for my children, who are also disabled. Finding another home is impossible with the high rents,” said Walid Abdul Jalil, a resident of the complex.

“We were promised these units would be converted into affordable rentals or ownership. We appeal to the governor and relevant authorities to address this crisis or provide alternative shelters, especially in this harsh winter.”.

Inam Majeed, another resident, emphasized the vulnerability of the displaced families. “Most of us were displaced and lived in tents before receiving these apartments. My husband and son are unemployed—where are we supposed to go?” she asked. “We urge the government to either let us stay or offer suitable alternatives to avoid displacing families, including children attending schools in the area.”
