Solar panels installed in five Dukan schools to address power shortages
SULAYMANIYAH — Schools in Sulaymaniyah’s Dukan district are benefiting from solar power systems to meet their electricity needs, according to local education officials. Five schools in the district have adopted solar energy, addressing power shortages.
Mahabad Mustafa, the director of education for Dukan, told 964media that while the center of Dukan has 24-hour electricity, rural and outlying areas often rely on national power grids, which supply electricity primarily at night. “We recognized the need to provide consistent electricity for schools to meet their operational requirements, so we began installing solar panels,” Mustafa said.
Currently, five schools in the district have installed solar panels, Mustafa said. Mustafa added that only two of the five schools received their solar panels through private donations from parents and community members, with the remaining three supported by the Sulaymaniyah governorate.
The installation of solar panels in the Kurdistan region, particularly in residential areas, is a relatively recent development that has gained traction in various cities and regions over the past few years.
Sulaymaniyah is experiencing a growing transition to renewable energy, with sectors such as religious institutions, schools, and residential communities increasingly adopting solar power solutions.
In 2023, a total of 188 homes and facilities in Sulaymaniyah implemented solar systems, highlighting a rising trend in the region. The local electricity authority has reported a surge in solar installation requests, indicating strong interest in sustainable energy options.
