Growing pet market

Baghdad hosts its first pet and bird festival, showcasing rare animals and promoting pet care

BAGHDAD — As part of the ongoing Baghdad Day celebrations, the Baghdad Municipality hosted a Pet and Bird Festival at Al-Zawraa Park, marking the first event of its kind in Iraq. The festival, which is part of an eight-day series of activities, featured a wide array of animals, including cats, dogs, canaries, snakes, and gazelles.

The event offered pet care demonstrations, training techniques, and nutritional advice. Veterinarians and companies specializing in pet products provided guidance to attendees on ensuring their animals’ health and well-being.

Mohammed Al-Rubaie, spokesperson for the Baghdad Municipality, told 964media, “The Municipality took the initiative to organize this festival following the success of Baghdad Day events in Al-Saray Street. This is the first event of its kind in Iraq, aimed at promoting pet care through training, breeding, and health awareness.”

Al-Rubaie noted the growing popularity of pet ownership in Baghdad, where animals have become a common presence in homes and neighborhoods. He also highlighted the contributions of K9 dogs to security operations. “We plan to enhance markets like Al-Ghazl, Al-Bayaa, and New Baghdad, making them more organized and appealing, with support from our awareness and guidance department,” he added.

Cat breeder Haider Al-Khalidi showcased three breeds at the festival, including the rare Munchkin cat. “The Munchkin is one of the rarest cats in Iraq, known for its short limbs and high intelligence,” Al-Khalidi said.

Dr. Huda Al-Qaisi, a veterinarian, stressed the importance of proper nutrition for animals. “Many breeders in Iraq rely on homemade diets, which can be either natural or artificial. Reducing artificial feeds and incorporating supplements ensures better health, aesthetics, and productivity for pets and birds,” she explained.

Festival attendees expressed their appreciation for the event’s unique offerings. Noor Al-Taie, a visitor, told 964media, “This is a beautiful and enjoyable festival, held for the first time in Baghdad. It’s wonderful to see rare animals, and I hope such events continue as they bring joy to breeders and visitors alike.”
