Majood family keeps sewing machine repairs alive in changing times

WASIT — In the heart of Kut city, Wasit province, the Majood family has upheld a legacy of sewing machine repairs, maintaining their craft despite the changing times. While some view sewing machines as relics of the past, the Majood family insists that many local households in Kut still depend on them.

Known for their expertise, the family tackles a wide range of technical issues in their bustling workshop in Kut’s central market, no matter how complex.

Ali Majood, a tailor and a key figure among the family’s repair experts, explained that his father started the trade in the 1950s and continued it until his death in 1983.

“My father held an agency for spare parts, but during the hardships of the 1990s, we had to make our own parts to keep the machines running,” Ali told 964media.

The family has also adapted to modern changes, learning to repair electronic machines alongside traditional mechanical models, continuously expanding their expertise as technology evolves.

Sewing machines remain a household staple in Kut, particularly among women who prefer tailoring their own clothes rather than buying ready-made garments. This enduring preference keeps the Majood family’s workshop busy, with local families regularly bringing in machines for repairs.

“The machines come in various types, including industrial ones used by tailors, household ones, embroidery machines, and overlock machines, all of which we repair without issues,” Ali concluded.
