Winless run continues

Al-Ahli thrashes Iraq’s Al-Shorta 5-1 in AFC Champions League Elite

NEWSROOM — Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ahli delivered a commanding 5-1 victory over Iraq’s Al-Shorta in the AFC Champions League Elite on Monday evening, securing their fourth consecutive win and maintaining an unbeaten record in the group stage. The match, held at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Saudi Arabia, strengthened Al-Ahli’s position at the top of Group A and dealt a significant blow to their Iraqi rivals.

The result has drawn considerable attention among Iraqi football analysts and fans. Al-Shorta, a leading team in the Iraqi Stars League with 14 points from six matches this season, had previously remained unbeaten with four wins and two draws. However, in the AFC Champions League Elite, Al-Shorta has struggled, recording two losses and two draws in four matches, highlighting a challenging campaign on the continental stage.

For Al-Ahli, it marked the first time they scored in the second half of a match in this season’s AFC Champions League, having previously failed to do so in the prior three games.

Al-Shorta, the reigning Iraq Stars League champions, claimed the league title last season for the third consecutive year and the seventh time in its history.
