Duhok woman wins ‘greenest residence’ title in regional eco competition
DUHOK — A home in Duhok has been recognized as the greenest residence in the Kurdistan Region, following an online competition organized by the Kurdistan Jingedosty Organization in collaboration with regional environment departments.
The month-long competition invited residents to submit photos of their homes through an online platform. With over 100 participants and more than 40 entries from Duhok alone, the winning home this year was a Duhok resident’s property, selected for its extensive greenery.
Narin Mahmoud, the winner, shared her green initiatives with 964media. “For over 20 years, we’ve cultivated flowers, trees, and vegetables around our home. We’ve also planted fruit trees, including figs, peaches, and apricots,” Mahmoud said.
Mahmoud explained her journey in the competition, saying, “I submitted photos of our home a month ago. Later, I was contacted and informed that our house was chosen as the greenest due to its 80 percent green coverage.”
The Duhok Municipality announced on Monday a new project to plant 100,000 flowers and saplings across the city, utilizing locally sourced plant varieties. In a Facebook post, the municipality highlighted that the initiative began several days ago.
“The goal is to beautify Duhok’s streets and markets and expand the city’s green spaces,” the municipality stated.
According to officials, Duhok currently has over 400 parks and gardens, achieving a green coverage rate of over 13 percent.
