'Finally moving forward'
Zarga Bridge set for reconstruction in Salah Al-Din, nearly a decade after ISIS destruction
SALAH AL-DIN — The Zarga Bridge in Tuz Khurmatu, Salah al-Din Governorate, is set for reconstruction after being destroyed by ISIS militants in 2014. Zulfiqar Haidar, Tuz Khurmatu’s mayor, told 964media, “After many years, the decision to rebuild Zarga Bridge is finally moving forward, with construction scheduled to begin at the start of the new year.”
Funded through a development initiative with a budget allocation of 61 billion Iraqi dinars, the bridge restoration forms part of larger regional reconstruction efforts, Haidar noted.
Two years ago, Tuz Khurmatu’s municipality constructed a temporary road next to the demolished bridge. However, Haidar explained that this solution has proven inadequate, as heavy rains frequently flood the makeshift road, posing risks for drivers and residents.
The Zarga Bridge serves as a critical connection between Tuz Khurmatu and other districts within Salah al-Din. Without it, drivers have had to detour through Kirkuk, adding roughly two hours to their travel time. The bridge’s reconstruction is expected to significantly improve local transportation and accessibility for the region.
